Shooting Video with DSLRs

With the creation of DSLR cameras that can record HD video, many photographers are coming into the video and film world. Likewise, many filmmakers are learning more about the world of photography. The cameras such as the 5D Mark II, Panasonic GH-1 and Nikon D5000 may be different from traditional video cameras, but the idea is the same. Much of the same equipment can still be used to create even better video.

A problem that is beginning to be realized with the Mark 5D II is the lack of an adjustable LCD. For still images a fixed LCD screen may be enough, but when the images are moving it may not always be the case. With other DSLRs that have an adjustable LCD, the screen is still small and may be difficult to use in all situations.

We solve this problem by using the ProAm On-Camera HD LCD Monitor Kit. With it's large 7" screen, available battery pack and swiveling accessory shoe mount, it's the perfect solution. Rachtech also offers an HD monitor with 800 x 480 native resolution with 1080p maximum resolution. This is very helpful when focusing a shallow depth of field and all adjustments are visible on-screen.

Another excellent product when making video is the ProAm Camera Crane. The large swooping motions that are capable with a camera crane make huge improvements to otherwise normal video. The shots you'll get from a crane aren't natural to peoples' eyes and will quickly grab and keep their attention. ProAm makes many models ranging from 4' to 12' in total length. When used with a wide angle lens, the video can be really amazing.

One piece of equipment that can never be overlooked is a good, sturdy tripod. When recording moving images, the traditional DSLR tripod may not be enough. You'll need a smooth fluid head to accomplish tilting and panning without effort or shakiness in the video. The Bogen 501HDV is a perfect match and our recommendation for every occasion.

Another very useful piece of equipment is a camera stabilizer. Made popular by the Stedicam, stabilizers can add a very important aspect to your production. Smooth, floating scenes are easy on the audience's eyes but many times, more interesting than static tripod shots. Because DSLRs are so lightweight, large stabilizing rigs aren't necessary. The Glidecam 4000 is very popular among videographers and filmmakers for achieving these shots.
